From Goat to Shawl: The Ethical Journey of Himalaya Pashmina
Not all shawls are created equal, and certainly not all “pashmina” is real.
The finest pashmina shawls in the world don’t come from machines or from fast fashion. They come from the cold, clean air of the Himalayas. From goats that survive winter at 4,000 meters. From hands that have practiced the same weaving art for generations.
If you’ve ever wondered how a pashmina shawl is made, here’s the full journey — from mountain to masterpiece.
🐐 It Begins in the Himalayas: The Chyangra Goat
Real pashmina starts with a very real animal: the Chyangra goat (Capra Hircus Laniger), native to the Himalayan regions of Nepal.

In winter, these goats grow an incredibly soft, warm undercoat to survive temperatures that drop far below zero. As spring arrives, this undercoat begins to shed naturally. If left untouched, the goat risks overheating, skin infections, and matting.
This is why herders gently hand-comb the goats, never shear or harm them. The process is slow, deliberate, and entirely ethical — a tradition passed through mountain communities for centuries.
Sorting & Spinning: From Fiber to Thread
Once the raw wool is collected, it’s cleaned in small batches with pure water and sorted by skilled artisans who separate the coarser guard hairs from the fine pashmina.

The selected fibers are then hand-spun into yarn on traditional wooden spinning wheels. This process can’t be replicated by machines — it requires instinct, rhythm, and touch. The resulting yarn is incredibly fine, strong, and soft.
This is how authentic pashmina is born — long before a shawl even exists.
Weaving by Hand: The Soul of Every Shawl
With the yarn ready, the next step begins: weaving. This is done on traditional wooden looms in small, family-run workshops. Each shawl takes several days to weave — carefully aligned row by row, without shortcuts.

This is where real pashmina separates from cheap imitations.
The texture is more breathable. The weave is tighter, softer, and warmer. The entire process is slow because it’s supposed to be. It’s what gives your shawl the natural drape, lightweight warmth, and timeless beauty that no machine can replicate.
Note: Each goat yields only around 150 grams of usable pashmina wool per year — making it one of the rarest and most luxurious natural fibers in the world.
Finishing: Softening, Dyeing & Fringing
After weaving, each shawl is washed gently — often with plant-based soaps, rice water, or mountain spring water. It’s then air dried, away from direct sun.
Some shawls remain in their natural hues (ivory, yak grey, beige). Others are dyed with azo-free color in small, safe batches.
The fringes? Still tied by hand. Some premium pieces are hand-embroidered. Nothing is cut or glued.

Now that you know how a pashmina shawl is made, you understand why they’re rare — and why they cost more than fast fashion scarves. The cost of real pashmina shawls reflects what goes into them:
Rare fiber from one goat
100% handwork
High-altitude logistics
A weaving tradition that’s centuries old
Sadly, most “pashmina” sold online today isn’t real. It’s often viscose, blended wool, or mass-produced cashmere branded as “Kashmir shawls” without true Himalayan origin.
True shawls of Kashmir and Nepal are heirlooms, not trends.
